What are Cookies?

Cookies are small, often encrypted text files that are stored on your device or in your internet browser. They are used by our web developers to help users navigate websites efficiently and perform certain functions. Due to their core role of enhancing and enabling usability or site processes, disabling cookies may affect the efficacy of (certain parts of) E-World Platform.

Cookies are created when a user's browser loads a particular website. The website sends information to the browser which then creates a text file which is stored on the users’ device in the browser’s directory. Every time the user visits the same website, the browser retrieves and sends this file to the website's server. Cookies are created not just by the visited website but also by ads, widgets, or other elements on the page being loaded. These cookies regulate how ads appear or how widgets and other elements function on the page.

Cookies are generally categorized into 4 types:

  • Strictly necessary cookies. These cookies are required for the operation of the E-World Platform. They include, for example, cookies that enable you to log into secure areas of the E-World Platform. Without these cookies, services you have asked for cannot be provided.
  • Performance cookies. These cookies collect information about how users use the E-World Platform, for example which web pages are visited or to identify errors, to help us to improve the way E-World Platform works. These cookies do not collect information that identifies a user. The information these cookies collect is aggregated and therefore anonymous. Please note that third parties (including, for example, providers of external services like web traffic analysis services) may have placed performance cookies on the E-World Platform.
  • Functionality cookies. These cookies allow the E-World Platform to remember choices you make (such as your user name, language or your region) and provide enhanced, more personal features. For instance, a website may be able to provide you with local weather reports or traffic news by storing a cookie concerning your region. These cookies can also be used to remember changes you have made to text size, fonts and other parts of web pages that you can customise. They may also be used to provide services you have asked for such as watching a video or commenting on a blog. The information these cookies collect may be anonymised and they cannot track your browsing activity on other websites.
  • Tracking cookies. These cookies collect information about your browsing habits and interests in order to make advertising relevant to you. They are also used to limit the number of times you see an advertisement and help measure the effectiveness of the advertising campaigns. They are usually placed by advertising networks with the website operator’s permission. They remember that you have visited a website and this information is shared with other organisations such as advertisers.

In addition there is a difference between ‘first party cookies’ and ‘third party cookies’. First party cookies are installed and managed by us, third party cookies are installed and managed by other service providers, such as Google.

These are session cookies (this means that these are automatically deleted when shutting down your browser) or persistent cookies (these files stay in one of your browser's subfolders until you delete them manually or your browser deletes them based on the duration period contained within the cookie’s file).

More information about the different types of cookies can be found at https://www.gegevensbeschermingsautoriteit.be/faq-themas/cookies and www.allaboutcookies.org.

Why do we use cookies?

We will use our cookies to be able to provide you with a well-functioning E-World Platform or, for the third party cookies, based on your consent or on our legitimate interest:

  • to allow you to participate in interactive features of the E-World Platform, when you choose to do so;
  • as part of our efforts to keep the E-World Platform safe and secure;
  • compile statistics;
  • analyze how the visitors of the E-World Platform make use of it (e.g. how many times a page is visited…);
  • send customized offers and special deals based on what visitors do on our site, but only if they have opted-in to receiving such special offers or we must do so to inform the user on changes to the platform that will impact them or their level of service.
